STEP catalyses the dephosphorylation of NMDA receptor 2B (NR2B or GRIN2B) at the site Y1472. As a consequence, AP-2 can associate with NMDA and mediate clathrin-dependant endocytosis of NMDAR and thus promote NMDA-mediated LTD.
