Exaggerated mGluR signalling in FXS results in overactivation of TrkB signalling as a compensatory mechanism in order to physically alter the shape of dendrites to prepare in advance for low postsynaptic activity. Activation of TrkB receptors by BDNF initiates intracellular cascades that locally initate the ramification of dendrites and formation of spines.
